Meet Peter Andrews
Founder and Legal Practitioner Director of Andrews Family Lawyers
Peter Andrews has more than 20 years of legal experience, predominantly in family law. His approach is to help clients understand the issues affecting their families, identify practical options and work towards resolving disputes without unnecessary complexity.
For clients across North Brisbane, Peter understands that separation often brings several concerns at once. Where will the children live? What happens to the family home? How should savings, debts and superannuation be divided? His approach is to identify the issues that matter most, explain the legal options and help clients understand what steps they can take.

Getting to our office from North Brisbane
Our office is at Lobby 1, Level 2, 76 Skyring Terrace, Gasworks Plaza, Newstead QLD 4006.
Driving
From the city side of north Brisbane, the run in is usually around 10 minutes via Wickham Street, with an alternate route via Doggett Street if there’s a closure. Travel time from further-out suburbs such as Chermside or Stafford is generally 15-20 minutes depending on traffic – times vary, so it’s worth checking live traffic conditions before you head in. There’s free parking on site.
Walking
Newstead connects to surrounding suburbs via the Brisbane Riverwalk and shaded local streets. It’s a flat, easy walk from Teneriffe (12 mins) or the Valley (19 mins).
Cycling
Safe, separated bike paths run along the river and through the precinct. There is secure bike parking and end-of-trip facilities available on site.

Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills stations are both a short 10-15 minute walk. These stations serve all major northside lines including Shorncliffe, Doomben, and Caboolture.

Court jurisdictions
Family law matters in Brisbane are dealt with by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, not a local Magistrates Court. The Brisbane registry is at the Harry Gibbs Commonwealth Law Courts Building, 119 North Quay, Brisbane QLD 4000.
Domestic and family violence protection order applications are generally dealt with in the Queensland Magistrates Court closest to where you live. We can explain which process applies to your situation and what the next step looks like.

Common questions from north Brisbane clients
Do I need to be based in the same suburb as my lawyer?
No. Family law matters are usually handled by phone, email and video, with in-person meetings and court appearances arranged as needed. Many of our north Brisbane clients never need to visit us in person. Clear communication and accessibility often matter more than proximity or multiple offices.
Can I have my consultation by phone or video?
Yes. We offer a free 20-minute initial phone consultation, and can continue to work with you by phone or video for the rest of your matter if that suits you better.
Where will my matter be heard if it goes to court?
Family law matters for Brisbane residents are generally heard at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia’s Brisbane registry. We can advise which registry applies to your specific circumstances.
What does it cost to get advice?
Costs depend on the type of matter, its complexity and whether agreement is reached. We offer fixed-fee arrangements with the scope confirmed in writing before work begins. Contact our office for costs information based on your circumstances.
How to find a good affordable family lawyer in North Brisbane
Start with a free consultation to understand your options before committing to fees. Andrews Family Lawyers in Newstead offers a free 20-minute phone consultation, and fixed-fee arrangements with the scope confirmed in writing before work begins.
Affordability in family law is not only about the hourly rate. The biggest cost driver is how long a matter takes to resolve. A lawyer who pushes for a negotiated outcome early (through direct negotiation, mediation or consent orders) will usually cost less overall than one who moves quickly to court proceedings. At Andrews Family Lawyers, negotiation and mediation are the default approach. Court proceedings are used when agreement is not possible.
When comparing family lawyers in North Brisbane, ask these questions before you engage:
- Do they confirm the scope and cost in writing before work begins?
- Do they offer fixed-fee arrangements, or only hourly billing?
- Do they focus on settlement first, or move quickly to litigation?
- Is the initial consultation free, and how long is it?
- Are court filing fees and disbursements explained separately from legal fees?
Court filing fees are set by the Federal Government (not by your lawyer) and apply regardless of which firm you use. Current filing fees effective 1 July 2026 (source: FCFCOA): divorce application $1,170 ($390 reduced fee for concession card holders); consent orders $215.
If cost is a significant concern, you can also contact the Family Relationship Advice Line on 1800 050 321 for free initial guidance, or check whether you are eligible for legal aid through Legal Aid Queensland.
How to choose a good family lawyer in North Brisbane
If you live in Chermside, Kedron, Stafford, Nundah, Clayfield, Windsor, Wooloowin, Gordon Park or Wavell Heights, you don’t need a lawyer in your suburb. You need a lawyer you can reach easily, who focuses on family law and who explains costs before you commit.
Here are five things worth checking before you engage anyone.
1. Confirm they are registered and focus on family law.
Search the Queensland Law Society register online to verify any lawyer you are considering. A firm that works only in family law will generally have deeper experience across parenting, property, divorce and financial agreements than a general practice that handles family law alongside conveyancing, wills and commercial work. Andrews Family Lawyers practises exclusively in family law from our Newstead office, a short trip from most North Brisbane suburbs via Wickham Street or the Inner City Bypass.
2. Ask how they charge before your first appointment.
Find out whether the firm offers fixed-fee arrangements or bills by the hour. Ask whether costs are confirmed in writing before work begins. At Andrews Family Lawyers, all fee arrangements are set out in writing before we start. We offer fixed-fee options for many services, and the initial phone consultation (up to 20 minutes) is free.
3. Ask how they approach resolution.
Most family law matters in Brisbane resolve through negotiation, mediation or consent orders rather than a contested hearing at the Federal Circuit and Family Court registry on North Quay. A lawyer who works toward agreement first will usually cost less overall than one who moves to court proceedings early. Ask what proportion of their matters settle without a final hearing.
4. Read reviews with a critical eye.
Look for reviews that describe a specific matter type (property settlement, parenting dispute, consent orders) rather than generic praise. Check whether reviewers mention the lawyer by name, describe the process, and explain how the outcome compared with what they expected. Twenty detailed reviews from clients across suburbs like Nundah, Albion and Clayfield tell you more than two hundred one-line ratings.
5. Use the free consultation to test the fit.
Most family lawyers in Brisbane offer a free initial consultation by phone. Use it to assess whether the lawyer listens, explains your options in plain English, and gives you a realistic picture of timeframes, costs and likely outcomes. If you leave the call more confused than when you started, that tells you something.
Our office is at Gasworks Plaza, Lobby 1, Level 2, 76 Skyring Terrace, Newstead. From Chermside or Stafford, the drive is around 15 to 20 minutes. From Kedron, Wooloowin or Gordon Park, it is closer to 10. The 60 CityGlider bus stops on Skyring Terrace, and Bowen Hills and Fortitude Valley train stations are a short walk. Free parking is available on site.
